A Beginner’s Guide To An Emotional Support Animal

Pet animals have been known to provide comfort and support to their human companions. Pet animals such as cats, dogs, miniature horses, birds, etc show unconditional affection and unwavering attention to their human companions. It is no surprise that people with emotional and/or mental health difficulties find it calming to be around their pet animals. Such pet animals thus take the responsibility of Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) for these people through an Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letter.

These people can get an  ESA letter for housing and traveling through a licensed mental health specialist so that they can enjoy the constant companionship of their beloved supporting pets.

What is an Emotional Support Animal?

The ESA is a pet that is kept as emotional support by its owner/parent. The ESAs provide emotional support for people suffering from mental and emotional disabilities and difficulties. The ESAs don’t require to be trained, however, an obedient pet animal does a lot good for the ESA parent.

For a pet to be an ESA pet, a licensed mental health specialist can prescribe the person a pet ESA to help him/her keep the emotional difficulties at bay. Keep in mind that there is no registration or licensing for the Emotional Support Animals, and only an ESA letter that authorizes the pet to be an ESA.

About the ESA letter

The ESA letter is applied for by the individuals who think that their condition (mental/emotional) can be greatly improved through having a pet as a prescribed ESA. A licensed mental health specialist then assesses these people either through online sessions or through in-person sessions.

The licensed specialist will then prescribe the ESA pet through a letter that will be stamped and signed and will contain the permission in written without mentioning any specifics about the illness of the applicant.

Why ESA and not a regular pet

One would raise questions about ESAs citing that if normal pets provide the same comfort and support there shouldn’t be any need to have a category of pets as ESAs.

Though the support of normal affectionate pets and ESA pets don’t differ, and neither does the effect they produce, with the ESA letter. Instead, these pet animals can have the liberty to accompany their human companions inflight and in rental properties with ‘no-pet’ policies. This allows the ESA pet to be in constant companionship and in need of ESA pet parents.  If you have a dog you should know about emotional support dog certification.

The various laws related to ESAs

Fair Housing Act

Under the Fair Housing Act, the ESAs can occupy any rental space, no matter the no-pet policy. With an authentic ESA letter provided to the owner of the property, the owner can’t bar the person to occupy the space with the ESA pet animal.

Moreover, the owner cannot ask from the ESA pet parent any advanced deposits or any unlawful pet fee. The living spaces that this law covers range from apartments to houses, and from dorms to workspaces.

The emotional support letter is a legitimate certificate that makes your pet an emotional support creature. Passionate help creatures are given more opportunity and favorable circumstances at that point pets since they are on the job to give love, solace, and fulfillment to their proprietors. They should be with their proprietors to make them intellectually steady or to defeat alarm assaults or nervousness scenes.

This allows the ESA parents to have the same opportunities as normal people, by being comfortable when around their ESA pet.

Air Carrier Acess Act of 1986

The act allows the Emotional Support Animals to board the plane with their ESA pet inside the passenger compartment. Under this law, if the pet animal is an ESA then the air carrier company cannot charge the person with a pet fee. Moreover, the ESA is to be properly accommodated in the passenger cabin. However, you should inform the Airline Carriers beforehand of your intention to travel with your ESA so that they can prepare beforehand. If you have ESA you have a support animal letter.
